KUCHING: Kuchingites bade a wet farewell to 2019 at the 2020 Countdown Fiesta at Kuching Waterfront this evening as incessant rain threatened to put a damper on the activities for the day.

Despite the challenging weather, hundreds of Kuchingites managed to get to the celebration site on foot, armed with umbrellas and raincoats, as several access roads into Kuching Waterfront were closed to traffic.

Some came as early as 5pm to witness various local artists performing live, while waiting for the main event scheduled at 10.45pm, to be graced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Among those performing were the Revolution Band and Intan Buskers who delivered their well-known songs, followed by a synchronised water and light show set to music from the Darul Hana Musical Fountain.

The mini concert also featured performances by Majlis Seni Sarawak Junior Orchestra and also well-choreographed traditional dances from various cultural troupes.

Performances take place at the countdown celebration.

Fireworks have also been scheduled over the Kuching cityscape overlooking the Darul Hana Bridge.

That was not the only new year countdown celebration in Kuching City as Kuching City South Council (MBKS) also held their own countdown party at the council’s headquarter’s compound.

Kuching South City mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng yesterday announced that the event was scheduled to start at 9am with an array of performances by local Chinese artistes including Sarawak’s very own Rynn Lin Yu Zhong, and from Peninsular Malaysia Vic Teo, Eric Lim Kien Fei, Faye An Ying Fei, Beta Teo Eng San and Joseph Ng.

Wee added that performances by the finalists of Kuching Got Talent like Adelynna Yang Tze Wee and Nicole Kho would also be showcased.

“Dance groups such as KinAte, The Spectacular and La Danse too will be performing their hip hop and K-pop dances to entertain spectators,” he said during a press conference this afternoon.

“Fireworks, food and drink stalls will also be organised for the enjoyment of the crowd. Members of the public will also have a chance to play games with the councillors and win some prizes,” said Wee.
